For the 450th anniversary of the founding of the Florentine Academy of Art and Design, and of the death of Michelangelo Buonarroti (February 18, 1564), Haltadefinizione® has published the Holy Family with Infant St John in high definition. Also known as the Doni Tondo, this is an artwork of rare importance because it is the only panel painting that is attributed to Michelangelo with certainty. It has now been added to HD images gallery, free for all users.
This high definition image is made even more interesting for also showing the painting’s original frame, which was probably drawn by Michelangelo himself. It was most likely made to celebrate the wedding of Agnolo Doni and Maddalena Strozzi. It is important in art history for its quite new way of presenting the three characters as a sculptural group and for the twisting pose of the Virgin Mary who turns toward the Child, which sets the stage for later Mannerist style.
