Haltadefinizione has contributed three faithful and detailed full-scale reproductions of the portraits of Ovidio Montalbani, Francesco Maria Zanotti and Luigi Ferdinando Marsili to the university’s art gallery, called the Quadreria.

These paintings have been held in the Hall of the Eight Hundredth Anniversary (la Sala dell’VIII Centenario) in the Rector’s Office and in the University Library, both of which are not open to the public. They are now permanently on display in the Museum of Palazzo Poggi, as part of an exhibition that reveals new views of the lives of the men, women and institutions that contributed to the flowering of the sciences in Bologna.

Haltadefinizione’s new facsimile copies will take the place of the originals in the Rector’s Office. This collaboration between art and technology allows the originals to be enjoyed in the museum exhibit, while the works also remain on view in their original location.

This advanced technology for the digital acquisition and reproduction of ultra-high definition Gigapixel images is used to print copies that are very close to the originals in their exact reprodution of colors, details and finishings. This leads to exciting new ways to use them for study and teaching without any risk to the originals.

The exhibition’s title translates as “Icons of the Sciences: Autobiographies and portraits of Bolognese naturalists in the early modern age.” It closed last year on September 30, (2019). The university took on the project to enhance the Quadreria art gallery, organized the exhibition and subsequently had the works reinstalled in their new permantent locations in the Rector’s Office, the Museum of Palazzo Poggi and the University Library.
